Every person eventually discovers that life has a way of testing what they believe. It doesn't usually happen during the easy seasons. It happens when a plan falls apart, when you have to begin again, or when you're forced to decide whether you're going to stay where you are or become someone different.

Over the years I've had more than one chance to start over. I left home as a teenager believing I was going to build a career in music. I worked construction and learned what it meant to create something with my hands. Sales taught me how to listen to people, not just talk to them. My sister introduced me to programming, and that opened the door to a career in digital strategy that lasted more than a decade. Then, just before I turned forty, I walked into a karate dojo as a complete beginner.

None of those chapters were part of a grand master plan. At the time they felt disconnected, and more than once I wondered whether I had wasted years chasing the wrong thing. Looking back now, I don't see detours anymore. I see preparation. Every skill became useful later, often in ways I never could have predicted.

That's one of the reasons I chose the name **Te Before Jitsu**.

In martial arts, I learned that techniques only matter if they solve the problem in front of you. Beautiful movement means very little if it doesn't work when it matters. Over time I realized that the same principle applies everywhere else. Businesses become more complicated than they need to be. Careers become exercises in maintaining appearances. People spend years trying to look successful instead of becoming capable.

The phrase that kept coming back to me was simple: **Function Before Form.**

It isn't a slogan. It's a reminder. Solve the real problem before worrying about how impressive the solution looks. Build useful skills before collecting titles. Learn to communicate before trying to persuade. Become someone who can contribute before worrying about recognition.

This code isn't a list of commandments, and it isn't something I expect anyone else to adopt. It's simply the collection of ideas that have helped me make sense of my own life. They've shaped how I train, how I teach, how I work, and how I hope to spend the years ahead.

As this journey continues, the code will probably grow and change with me. That's intentional. Learning should leave us different than it found us. If these ideas remain exactly the same twenty years from now, it will probably mean I stopped paying attention.

My hope is that somewhere in these pages you'll find an idea that encourages you to begin something you've been putting off. Maybe that's learning a new skill, changing careers, stepping into a dojo for the first time, writing the book you've been talking about for years, or taking a road you've never traveled before.

You don't need to become someone else overnight. You only need to take the next honest step.

That's where every worthwhile journey begins.

This is what we believe
